Go Pumpkin Picking
While there are some traditions we have had to skip this year, luckily heading to the pumpkin patch to get our Halloween pumpkins isn’t one of them. If you’re looking for a fun family activity, this is a great way to get outdoors and take advantage of a nice, crisp autumn day.
If you’re not familiar with the pumpkin patches in your area, a quick internet search should give you all the information you need, including any safety measures that may currently be in place. Be sure to keep an eye out for patches with extra activities like corn mazes!
Some patches have baked goods or other treats for sale that you can enjoy as part of your visit. If not, see if the patch allows you to bring your own food. They may even have picnic tables, hay bales, or other areas set aside for you to relax in. Or you may be able to simply use your tailgate.
If you want to make something special but need inspiration, try a classic cider and donut combo. We’ve got great recipes for Chilled Spiced Cider and Sweet Milk Donuts that are a perfect fit.
Or if you’re looking for something simpler but still festive, try Southern Living’s Caramel Peanut Popcorn Snack Mix. It’s delicious caramel corn with peanuts and Reese’s Pieces.
Some other things to keep in mind:
- Most patches have clippers and wheel barrows you can borrow, but you may want to bring along old towels and/or large boxes to corral muddy pumpkins once you get them to your vehicle.
- Don’t forget insect repellent if you live in an area like we do where it’s still pretty warm.
- If you’re bringing along snacks, remember to pack a blanket or tablecloth, napkins (and potentially wet wipes too), anything you need for serving (plates, cups, etc.), and a small bag for garbage.
